- : about problems with '030. Why wouldAT want to release a machine that was
- : just gonna have problems running everything, and call it official?
-
- The reason nobody cares is because a good number of these programs that
- have compatability problems are games (as you said).
-
- It seems to be a competition with Amiga game developers on who can make
- the game with the least compatability, and on who can make the game that
- hacks the OS and bangs the hardware the most. This is why people who got
- A1200s found that many of their older games would crash. OCS/ECS wasn't
- there anymore - that self-modifying code would bomb when your caches were
- on - those demos would falter when their raster times were different from
- being put on DblPAL and not regular PAL screens.
-
-
- Simple points
- - 95% of all programs that work fine with an 030 with caches on and with
- 32-bit FAST-MEM will work with an 040 or 060.
-
- - excluding games and demos, over 90% of Amiga software made latter than
- 1990 works fine with an 020 to 060.
-
- - Only 40% of nonAGA games work with an 020 or 030 with caches on. Less
- than 35% will work with an 040 with copyback mode on. A good deal
- won't even work if you have KS 2.x or higher. Perhaps 60%-80% work
- with caches and FAST-MEM off.
-
- - Demos are even worse. If you want to run demos on your A1200, you
- might as well always turn your FAST-MEM and caches off.
-
-
- So when we design new machines, WHY MUST WE figure in compatability with
- THESE CRAP PROGRAMS? I say screw them. I wish AT would issue a little
- more control over these developers. Hardware banging should be left for
- drivers and low-level libraries, not the games.
